Starbucks is taking no chances with its’ children’s cups.
In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the coffee giant is recalling 250,000 children’s plastic cups after receiving seven reports of cups breaking. In two instances, a child began to choke on a broken piece although no injuries have been reported.
If dropped, the colorful face on the cup can break and leave sharp edges exposed that can pose a choking or laceration hazard. Made in China, the cups were sold from May 2006 to August 2007 and cost $6. The recall includes four styles of 10-ounce cups: “Dot” Red Ladybug, “Dash” Green Turtle, Bunny Pink and Chick Yellow.

Four years ago, there was a similar recall when Starbucks recalled 38,000 children’s tumbler cups. It was determined when the flexible straw on the cups was chewed, small pieces of plastic could detach, posing a choking hazard. The company had received two reports of straw pieces becoming detached in children's mouths. In one case, a child began to choke on a detached piece and the Heimlich Maneuver was administered by a parent to remove the small piece.
