The safety features in most cars these days are pretty miraculous. Anti-lock brakes, seatbelts, rear motion sensors, and anti-rollover technology all do a pretty fair job at keeping drivers and passengers safe when an accident occurs.
But the one thing that nobody has ever thought of replacing or doing away with is the seatbelt.
Airbags are fine, but only when used in conjunction with a seatbelt. Anti-rollover technology is fine, but in the event that your car does roll over, your chances of surviving drop dramatically unless you are wearing your seatbelt. In fact, the odds of survival in the event of a car accident rise dramatically if you are wearing your seatbelt.
Survey after survey and study after study has proven this.
So it is somewhat beyond our understanding as to why there are still people getting in their cars every day without strapping themselves in, or even worse, aren’t putting their seatbelts on properly.
It goes without saying that you should always wear your seatbelt, but wearing it in the wrong way can be almost as damaging as not wearing it at all. When you put on your seatbelt, please make sure of the following things:
Make sure that your belt is fitted across your hips. Don’t place it across your stomach.
Make sure that the belt is snug across your chest, and keep it well away from your neck.
Don’t put the seatbelt under your arm or behind your neck.
Not wearing your seatbelt correctly could do real damage to your spine, neck or legs, even if the accident is minor. So be very careful when you put on your seatbelt and make sure that it is on correctly.
Seatbelts exist to keep you in the car in the event of an accident. This is an important aspect of crash safety. Not wearing your seatbelt can put cause you to go through the windshield, or throw you around the inside of a car that is in the midst of crashing. Neither one of these options is a good one if you hope to either survive a crash or get through it without being seriously injured.
As long as we have been providing legal assistance for injury victims in Miami, we have noticed that our clients who weren’t wearing seatbelts who were lucky enough to survive always suffered injuries that were much more extensive and much more costly to the victims and their families.
It’s a simple enough idea. If you are getting into a car for any trip, no matter how short or long, wear your seatbelt. Your life could depend on it.
