A fraud scheme that involved lawyers, chiropractors and physical therapists was cracked in Boston. Charged in U.S. District Court in Boston is 57-year-old Ty Quy Mai, who faces 54 counts of mail fraud. He is charged with staging auto accidents, processing fake documentation and running mock physical therapy clinics in the Boston suburbs of Dorchester, West Roxbury, Brockton, Quincy, and Worcester between 2000 and 2006, according to court documents obtained by the Boston Globe.
Mai allegedly paid people to stage accidents and then seek treatment at his physical therapy clinics. He supposedly used toy cars to demonstrate to participants how the accidents should unfold and appear to police, according to the indictment.
Prosecutors allege Mai submitted insurance claims for patients who did not require medical treatment. The indictment specifies Mai had participants in his scheme fake orthopedic injuries.
To keep the scheme a secret, Mai altered the names of his physical therapy clinics and billing companies, according to the indictment. If convicted, Mai faces up to 20 years in jail on each count and a $250,000 fine.
The fraud investigation led to the arrest of 500 people in Mai’s scheme.
